Vacancy: Mental Health Consultant

Location: London Office (with outreach to hospitals, tribunals, or care settings)

Role Overview

We are seeking passionate individuals to join our mental health law team, supporting clients detained under the Mental Health Act 1983, involved in Mental Capacity Act matters, and engaged in advocacy within the legal and healthcare system.

🔹 Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as an Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA) or Independent Mental Capacity Advocate (IMCA)

  • Support clients through detention hearings, hospital manager reviews, and Community Treatment Order (CTO) appeals

  • Liaise with solicitors, healthcare teams, clients, and families to prepare legal documentation

  • Draft or assist with witness statements, legal submissions, and care reviews

  • Advise on discharge entitlements (Section 117) and capacity-related matters

  • Maintain accurate client records and comply with Legal Aid quality standards

🔹 Who Should Apply?

  1. Experienced Consultants with advocacy panel accreditation and tribunal support experience

  2. Recent Mental Health Graduates eager to start a career in legal advocacy—training and mentoring provided.

Essential Skills & Qualifications:

  • IMHA / IMCA accreditation or working toward accreditation

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Mental Health Act 1983, Mental Capacity Act 2005, and Care Act 2014

  • Strong communication, empathy, and case-management skills

  • Willingness to engage in tribunal preparation and legal teamwork

  • Legal Aid eligibility and entitlement to work in the UK

  • Your CV, including internship, volunteer, or academic experience in mental health advocacy

  • Cover letter expressing your interest and explaining any advocacy or tribunal experience—or motivation to train as an IMHA/IMCA

  • Evidence of panel accreditation or relevant training (or confirmation of ongoing courses)

  • Right to Work in the UK documentation

  • Two references, especially if you have worked or volunteered in healthcare, legal, or social care settings
